Lake Travis vs. Killeen – Texas 4A Quarterfinals

Garrett Gilbert

Future Texas Longhorn QB Garrett Gilbert took the field for the first time at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium for the first of many Saturdays to come, and his Lake Travis Cavaliers routed the Killeen Kangaroos by a score of 71-9 in the State 4A Quarterfinals.

Gilbert threw for 360 yards and four touchdowns. Unfortunately, he also accounted for two interceptions and two fumbles. Lake Travis rolled for 621 yards total offense and never had to punt.

Killeen managed only 144 yards and a field goal on offense, with a touchdown coming on a 17 yard fumble return by Tamarcus Brown.

The wife had worked an overnight Friday, so I decided to give her some quiet and head out to the game, both to check out Gilbert and to get some more practice with my new Nikon CoolPix P80 before next Sunday’s Dallas Cowboys game (SLR’s aren’t allowed in Texas Stadium).

Gilbert looked like a man among boys on the field, with both impressive speed and a strong arm. He did make some poor decisions (hence the four turnovers), but then he is still in high school.

The CoolPix P80 is a nice little camera, and the zoom is fantastic, but it does seem to be very susceptible to lens flare. This seems to especially be the case when shooting in the continuous Sports Mode.
