Astrophotography: Venus-Jupiter Convergence - November 30th
For those that don’t know, there is an interesting convergence of celestial objects occurring right now. The two brightest planets, Venus and Jupiter, have been moving closer and closer together over the last few weeks. Tonight and tomorrow night, they are only two degrees apart.
It was a tough night for astrophotography. The convergence occurs just [...]
Mumbai: Police Didn’t Shoot Back
According to Sebastian D’Souza, a Mumbai photographer, armed police refused to engage with the terrorists in India. And the world receives another example that one’s safety is one’s own responsibility. Relying on other to provide security is a sure-fire (pun intended) way to become a statistic.
India has a long history of draconian anti-gun legislation, stretching back into the 19th century. The British managed to put down a major Indian insurrection in 1857, and quickly moved to ensure it did not occur again. The Indian masses were systematically disarmed and means of firearm production were destroyed, so that the Indians could never rise against their colonial masters again. [...]
Longhorns on the Outside Looking In
As expected, the Oklahoma Sooners jumped my Texas Longhorns in today’s BCS rankings. As a result, Oklahoma is off to Kansas City next weekend to play the collapsing Missouri Tigers for the Big Twelve Championship. Win there, and the Sooners are most likely off to Miami to play in the national championship against the winner [...]
Oklahoma vs. Okie State (and Other Games)
If it’s the final Saturday in November, then it must be time for the Bedlam Series, the annual game between cross-state rivals Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. The Sooners are playing for a shot at the Big 12 Championship game and the national championship game. The Cowboys are playing for pride.
Okie Lite hasn’t won in seven years, but the last time they did so, Oklahoma was third in the BCS and had their national championship hopes dashed by the loss. Oklahoma State would certainly love to play spoiler again. [...]
Texas versus Texas A&M Thoughts & Pictures
Order was restored to the universe Thursday evening, with Texas defeating Texas A&M by the largest margin of victory in the series since the 19th century, Mack Brown getting his 200th career win, and the Longhorns taking sole possession of the record for the second most winning program in NCAA football.
Was it enough to hold [...]
Texas-Texas A&M Predictions
Mongol General: Conan! What is best in life?
Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women.
Mongol General: That is good! That is good.
– “Conan the Barbarian”
Terry: All right. Now I have complied with your every request, would you agree?
Rusty: I would.
Terry: Good, ’cause now I have [...]
Astrophotography: Venus-Jupiter Convergence
If you’ve been watching the skies for the last few weeks, you’ve seen an interesting show just after sunset. The two brightest stars in our sky, Venus and Jupiter, have been getting closer and closer.
The highlight will be December 1st when a waxing crescent moon joins the show.
I’ll be shooting both November 30th and December [...]
What Happened to Night Hawk Frozen Dinners?
Anyone who is old Austin will remember Night Hawk Frozen Dinners. They were a collection of chopped steak dinners, the best of which came with tater tops.
I don’t remember for sure if these were around before microwave ovens, but I always cooked mine in the regular oven. There was this little packet of butter sauce [...]

Does Mike Leach Leave Texas Tech?
Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach is a riddle, wrapped in an enigma, with a strong dose of lysergic acid diethylamide. So, predicting his future behavior is generally a lesson in humility. But after last night’s loss to Oklahoma, it’s time to ask, Does Mike Leach stay or does he go?
This year’s team is as [...]
