Texas at #4 in the BCS

Checking the new BCS Rankings this evening was a pleasant surprise. Texas is fourth.

Here are the current standings:

1. Alabama
2. Texas Tech
3. Penn State
4. Texas
5. Florida
6. Oklahoma
7. USC
8. Utah
9. Oklahoma State
10. Boise State

There are several unexpected things in this:

  • I wasn’t expecting Texas Tech to jump Penn State.
  • I thought OU and Florida would probably jump us.
  • I didn’t think Florida would jump Oklahoma.

I actually don’t disagree with any of these (although the Florida jump is a bit questionable); I just didn’t think it would work out this way. I thought the late season loss by Texas would cost them more, and I thought the West Coast press love for USC would pump them up more.

As things stand now, Texas is still poised for good things, but needs some help. If they win out, they should get a BCS at large bid, at least.

We need either Penn State or Alabama to drop a game. The latter is very likely to happen.

Then Texas Tech needs to lose to either Oklahoma or Oklahoma State, and preferably to both. Two loses for Tech puts Texas into the Big 12 Championship game. Win there, and we’re probably Miami bound.

Lots of football still to be played.

Just win out, Texas!
