This morning at PubCon here in Austin, Google’s Matt Cutts announced the Google Friend Connect API.
Google Friend Connect is a single login system for interactive websites such as blogs, forums or social networks. It can use your existing Google, Yahoo, AIM or OpenID account.
It’s too early to say whether this will gain enough traction to be truly useful, but as it’s from Google, it’s correct to give it the benefit of the doubt.
To that end, I’ve upgraded the BrianCombs.net blog to support Google Friend Connect. I did so by using the Friend Connect commenting plugin from the prolific Joost de Valk.
Please be aware that the plugin currently needs your blog to be on WordPress 2.7 or greater, although Joost is working on it.
